From the author of The Passion and The Promise
Emory Hilliford, an unassuming anthropology professor, is drugged, held captive and interrogated by a mysterious stranger who wants only one thing the truth about an ancient race of beings known as the lupinotuum, half man/half wolf, who have walked among humans for centuries. Once they ruled the tundra, now they rule Wall Street. Once they fought with teeth and claws, now they fight with wealth and power. And Emory Hilliford, an orphan who was raised by a family of sophisticated, influential lupinotuum in twentieth century Venice, is uniquely positioned to chronicle their culture, their history, and their secrets.
Unknown to all but a select few, Emory has also been carefully groomed to play a crucial role in history, one that could have deadly consequences for his own race, and theirs. Now forced to tell his story, Emory must decide how much of the truth he can afford to reveal, and what secrets he will take to his grave... because his own time is running out.
From the ancient legends of Greece and Rome to the mysteries of the Dark Ages and the glitter of modern day New York, RENEGADE is a sweeping saga of passion and betrayal, sacrifice and destiny, that will consume your days and haunt your nights long after the last page is turned.

Ten years is a long time to wait, but fans of Donna Boyd's "The Passion" (1998) and "The Promise" (1999) waited not so patiently for the third in the Devoncroix Dynasty series. Now there is "Renegade" - published by the author whose real name is Donna Ball and whose other names include Rebecca Flanders, Donna Carlisle, Leigh Bristol, and Taylor Brady.I discovered her work when I first shared my fantasy manuscript filled with shifter dogs and a few werewolves. A dog trainer friend told me I must read "The Passion." I found not the werewolves of scary movies, teens from "Twilight" (2005), or the children's fantasy world of Harry Potter (1997). Here was a race of creatures living among us - our business leaders, sports stars, and glittering celebrities - like us, but more gloriously beautiful and intelligent. They embodied the best and the worst of humanity. I believed in that possibility as I imagine did many of her fans.
Step into the world of the Devoncroix werewolves and look at the world differently. I loved returning to the castle in Alaska and leaning more about their lives in Italy. "Renegade," like the others is an exciting, well-crafted mix of urban fantasy, suspense, mystery, romance, shapeshifting werewolves, and historical fiction.
More please, Ms. Boyd. Don't let the lupinotuum keep you from sharing their stories.

Renegade Donna Boyd 9780977329618 Books Reviews
The most important tool the writer has for creating an alternate universe is the use of language. Donna Boyd succeeds by using words to construct a glittering world of refined taste and blood rituals in which werewolves reign, secretly ruling the world.
The writing style reminds of Deborah Harkness in A Discovery of Witches. Boyd, however, moves the plot along a good deal faster and conceals the final plot twist with greater sleight of hand.
I am tempted to give this five stars. However, I read a great deal, especially the free offerings, and it takes rather a lot to knock my socks off. It wasn't especially hard to put the book down and resume reading later; it takes that kind of compelling story to earn the fifth star. As well, the way the tale was told in flashbacks was sometimes distracting, as the present intervened (or interfered) in the smooth development of the tale.
All in all, it was a good read with few enough typos and well worth the price ($0.00).
I just finished reading Renegade and liked it a lot. The werewolf genre has been done to death and all too often, authors stick to the usual conventions. I was pleased to see Donna Boyd did not. In many ways, she elevates the werewolves in her book to the same level that is usually reserved for vampires they are highly intelligent, sophisticated and of course supremely beautiful and ferociously strong. I very much appreciated this take over the typical portrayal of werewolves as nothing but crude beasts.
The story is interesting and well crafted. I won't give away any spoilers but will comment that it holds enough surprises and tension to keep you turning the pages until the very end. Speaking of which I particularly enjoyed the surprise ending. Very nicely done.
The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of two things
- I dislike the alternating flash backs and current time chapters. Though I am well aware that this is a pet peeve of mine and not a fault of the book. If you don't mind that kind of structure, then it's all good.
- A couple of the plot twists felt a bit rough for my taste. I believe they could have been done a bit more elegantly. This is a minor quibble as it doesn't detract from the story.
Overall, a highly recommended book if you like supernatural thrillers. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Though I was very glad to continue the saga after such a long wait, I was ultimately disappointed in this book. It's certainly not terrible and I would still recommend fans read it, I found it quite a departure from the first two in a few important ways. The writing style is still the same, as is the mix of a present-day frame around a story from the past, but this read more like a mystery/suspense, unlike the drama of the first two books. I don't want to go into to much detail and give things away, but there are constant twists and turns of who is lying, who is a traitor, who is hiding, and the fact that the narrator is not always honest doesn't help this fact. I'm not saying I don'y enjoy an involved plot, but the pieces were shifting so rapidly at times it was hard to keep up.
As one example that doesn't give away any of the main plot, the story of the Queen Eudora, the werewolf that first decreed that werewolves should not harm humans, is told multiple times, and each time there is a new twist or secret added to it that changes the story significantly each time. The narrator knows the truth the whole time, and it can be frustrating to constantly see the story through his unreliable and disjointed narration. It's not inherently bad, but it was disorienting at times just keeping up with each new twist, instead of just following the story.
Another thing I felt upon reading the first two and this back to back was that there was a lot still unexplained. Some of that is deliberate and leaves plenty of room for another book, but other small pieces just didn't really match with what we learned before. Since all of the books have been in the form of someone telling a story from the past, it's reasonable to assume they are unreliable narrators at times, and given that the narrator of this book is explicitly caught lying in his story multiple times, this seems the weakest. The Brotherhood of the Dark Moon fits my points from both this paragraph and the previous, in that their purpose and intent was constantly changing (both in history and present day) in ways that didn't really add up with what we know of them and certain key characters from previous books. Again, I wish I could get into specifics of what doesn't really add up, but I wouldn't want to ruin anything.
There were other things that were very similar to the last book, for example (minor, obvious, and early spoilers ahead) a forbidden romance between adopted siblings, with the sister being "different" from other werewolves, not belonging with the pack, and preferring the company of humans, and though the brother doesn't understand this attraction, he always just wants to protect her. Sound familiar?
If you loved The Passion and The Promise, this is still a good read, but don't expect the same level of quality. Other reviewers seem to love it though, so you may love it too! I certainly hope you do.
